3 Ways Publishing is Par for the Course

One of the hobbies I picked up during the pandemic is golf.

You’ll have to trust me when I say that no one was more surprised that I love — and am pretty good at — playing golf. (With a few more lessons, I might be better than my husband who has played for decades.)

Scott and I go to our local driving range once a week and I started to see parallels between the practice of golf and the practice of building an audience in order to get a traditional book deal.

Here are three similarities between the sport of golf and publishing that I hope you’ll find helpful, even if you’ve never picked up a sand wedge in your life.

#1: Golf — and building an author platform — is all mental.

Every sport I love — whether it’s distance running, aerial yoga or golf — has a mental component that’s as important to success as the physical activity involved.

That’s not a coincidence because the success I’ve had as an entrepreneur, editor and collaborator is also thanks to my mental game.

And so is yours.

Being brave enough to put yourself out there day after day in emails, posts on social media, and with potential clients is all mental. Sure, there’s some physical activity — mostly typing on keys — but whether you succeed…
