I Can’t Get a Book Deal Because . . .

I’m not pretty enough.

If you’ve been getting emails from me on the regular, you know I tell the truth. In fact, one of our company values here at MSB is integrity. IMHO, integrity includes being honest — sometimes, brutally.

I hear a lot of bullshit excuses about why people can’t get book deals.

Complaints about how publishing works, about building a platform, about being too busy . . .

And after working in the industry for 15+ years, I know that most of these complaints are really excuses or resistance from the people who believe what they’re saying. Which, frankly, isn’t my problem.

But when I posted in a group of fellow entrepreneurs about my services, I got a unique response that broke my heart.

I can’t get a book deal because I’m not pretty enough.

The person who posted was — is — partially right.

At the time, I replied with an upbeat, positive message that wasn’t really true.

Because looks do matter when it comes to getting a traditional book deal.

In fact, I have point-blank told my clients that their odds are better because of their appearance — whether that be their looks, their confidence or simply how they show up.
