What Really Sells Your Book

I’m a huge fan of country music.

I love it because most songs in the genre have a clear, obvious narrative. Also, every successful artist that lasts for years, if not decades, has a distinct personality and brand.

A great example of that is Kacey Musgraves. As a songwriter and singer, Kacey is honest, witty, and funny. Like me, she doesn’t fuck around. Kacey admits to smoking weed, being imperfect, and doubting herself. She holds people accountable, and took the paparazzi to task when they accused her of being a bitch for not smiling when they asked.

She’s a great example of a personal brand that uses authenticity as a strength.

She’s written many terrific songs but a line from “Pageant Material” stands out:

I’d rather lose for what I am than win for what I ain’t.

Even though interest in working with me and my team has exploded, I still look at every application that comes in. I’m proud to say that over 200 people have applied to work with MSB in 2021.

Most — if not all — of those folks had a unique idea or a unique approach to their area of expertise. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize — your book idea doesn’t matter as much as who it is coming from.
