What Self-Publishers Don’t Want You to Know

I don’t have a problem with self-publishing.

In the past, I’ve helped authors develop a book concept, write their manuscript, and publish their work themselves — — when those authors were better served by self-publishing because their topic was niche.

What I do have a problem with is the messages that self-publishers perpetuate.

Things like:

Write and launch your book in 90 days!

Become a bestselling author!

Keep 100% of your rights when you publish!

I get a bee in my bonnet every time I see this shit — — and believe me, it’s shit — — because most of it is simply trying to sell you on a service. None of it is true, or in your best interest as an author.

Can you write and launch your book in 90 days? Sure.

But should you? Fuck no. Every author I work with — — including those who self-published — — took years to write, edit, strategize, market, and launch their book.

Can you become a bestselling self-published author? Yes.

But is it likely, especially if you don’t have a large, established and engaged audience?

Definitely not. And don’t even get me started on “bestselling” authors who hit #1 in…
