In 2018, I worked with a female entrepreneur who wanted to write a book about how to create, manufacture and sell your own clothing line.

We wrote a proposal together but when I approached literary agents the overwhelming response was: this is a great idea for a book but she needs a bigger audience before we can sell this to a publisher.

So my client naturally asked me to help.

What did she specifically need to do in order to sell this proposal to a publisher?

I’m ashamed to say I had no answer.

Fast forward two years, and I was having that same conversation at least once a week. Entrepreneurs and experts were coming to me constantly with great ideas for books but very small audiences. Think tens of people, not the thousands literary agents and publishers require.

And my answer was still the same. Go build your platform and come back when you’ve got thousands of people on your Instagram and on your email list.

I’ll be honest — I started to feel frustrated with myself for perpetuating this bullshit that had kept publishing closed to basically anyone but the few entrepreneurs who had figured out how to build large, eager audiences that support a traditional book deal. So I looked at my…
